SGD 1 - Essentials of NonProfit Board Leadership

This session provides participants with a macro perspective of the nonprofit ecosystem, its structure, the major players, applicable regulations, policy priorities, and an understanding of the practical implications on the duties and workings of the nonprofit organisation (NPO) board and its directors.


Course Objectives

  1. Examine the nonprofit landscape in Singapore, the implications for nonprofit governance and how it differs from that of commercial organisations.
  2. Understand the NPO board structure and its role.
  3. Differentiate between conformance and performance.
  4. Understand the “head and heart” of a nonprofit leader.

Note: All exempt, registered charities and Institutions of a Public Character can apply for a training grant from the Charities Capability Fund. Do note that funding is subject to approval by the National Council of Social Service. In the event that funding is rejected, participants will be liable to pay the full course fee.


SPEAKERS

Theresa Goh
Chair, Charity Council

Ms Theresa Goh was appointed Chair of Charity Council on 1 March 2023. An SID Council member, she has been involved in many initiatives in the charities sector, including SID’s thrust into the nonprofit space. Ms Goh is the Managing Founder of 360 Dynamics and serves on the boards of the Agency for Integrated Care and National Council of Social Service. She is the Immediate Past Chair of SATA CommHealth and helped set up the Centre for Non-Profit Leadership, where she served as Chair. Ms Goh is the author of Leading for Good (2021), a guide for leaders to be more effective through a deep understanding of self, purpose and ecosystems.


Desmond Chin
Commissioner of Charities

Mr Desmond Chin was appointed Commissioner of Charities on 1 November 2020. He also serves as executive director of the Registry of Cooperative Societies and Mutual Benefit Organisations. He was previously the Commissioner of Prisons and held several key positions in the Ministry of Home Affairs, among them as Head, Joint Operations and Emergency Planning, Deputy Commissioner of Prisons and Chief-of-Staff. He also served as the Chief Executive Officer of the Singapore Corporation of Rehabilitative Enterprises from 2005 to 2010. He was awarded the Public Administration Medal (Gold) in 2020.

Gregory Vijayendran
Honorary General Secretary, National Council of Social Service

Mr Gregory Vijayendran is a partner in Rajah & Tann Singapore LLP. He is the Immediate Past President of the Law Society of Singapore and Chairman of ProBonoSG. Mr Vijayendran was the inaugural Pro Bono Ambassador of the Law Society in 2010. Over the years, he has actively served in community-based legal clinics and represented indigent clients. He specialises in contentious and non-contentious charities’ governance and has a longstanding involvement in community service.
