On the 10th anniversary of the Singapore Institute of Directors, I would like to offer my heartiest congratulations to the Institute and its people on their pursuit of excellence and promotion of good corporate governance in Singapore.

The Institute has provided thought leadership on corporate governance and directorship issues in Singapore. It played a key role in the drafting of the Code of Corporate Governance in 2001, and the Guidebook for Audit Committees in Singapore issued in 2008. In support of national efforts to raise professional standards amongst directors, the Institute has also been conducting regular training courses to enhance their effectiveness.

As we pass this major milestone in the Institute’s history, it is timely for us to reinforce understanding in the corporate sector at large on the importance and benefts of good governance, and enhance our reputation as a trusted centre for business. Corporate governance that is sound, and conducive to both the management of risks and business growth, is a cornerstone of Singapore’s business sector and a competitive advantage that we should preserve.

I have full confdence that the Institute will continue to play an important role in the development of good corporate governance practices, as a forum for exchange of information and ideas, and as a hub for professional training and education of directors.
