Courses

Are the courses only available to members of the Singapore Institute of Directors (SID)?

No, non-members are welcome to join the courses. However, members of SID enjoy a discounted rate for the courses.

Are there fees associated with Goods and Services Tax (GST) for the courses?

No, you do not have to pay GST. All prices indicated on the marketing communications and on website are NETT prices.

What is the date due for application of the course?

Registration form and payment must reach the Secretariat 5 working days before the course, unless otherwise stated.

Will I be able to obtain refund if I am unable to attend the course after registration?

No, refund will not be given, however if a participant wishes to withdraw from the event, a substitute delegate will be welcomed. This is subjected to SID being notified at least 2 working days before the event.

What happens if I fail to attend the course after registration?

A no-show fee of the entire course fee will be charged if you fail to attend the event after registration. However, you will be allowed to send a substitute delegate for that course provided the Institute’s Secretariat is notified at least 2 working days before the event.

What do I need to bring for the course?

You do not have to bring anything for the course as materials and writing pens will be provided. However, you may like to bring along your name cards as there will be ample opportunity for networking.

Unfortunately I don't have much time to attend any formal training courses. What would you recommend for me to acquire the basic knowledge of the regulation?

We would recommend that you attend or “Understanding the Regulatory Environment in Singapore: What Every Director Ought to Know” which is conducted twice a year. You may also want to look at the other topics in our formal training programme, which are all modular half day stand-alone workshops on the different board committees & risk management – depending on what interest you.

What is the typical profile of those attending the Institute’s courses?

Directors of listed and private companies, aspiring directors and professionals such as accountants and lawyers, as well as senior management and those who work closely with Boards.

What is the certification course organised by Singapore Institute of Directors and Singapore Management University called?

SID-SMU Executive Certificate in Directorship programme

What is SID-SMU Executive Certificate in Directorship programme?

This is a certificate-level programme for company directors, aspiring directors and top management in business and governance.

What are the three modules in the SID-SMU Executive Certificate in Directorship programme?

The first module of the programme is “The Role of Directors: Duties, Responsibilities and Obligations”. Module 2 of the programme is “Strategic Business Directions” and Module 3 is “Finance for Directors”.

What is the structure of the programme?

Each certificate module lasts 3 days and is conducted in 2 consecutive blocks of 1.5-day sessions spread over 2 weeks. Assessments will be conducted a week after the completion of teaching for each certificate module. Each of the 3 modules are stand alone modules and do not have to be taken in consecutive order.

What is the certification which I will receive upon completion of the programme?

You will be awarded the “Executive Certificate in Directorship” upon completion of all three certificate modules

What is the certification which I will receive if I complete one module of the programme?

Upon successful completion of each certificate module, participants will be presented with a certificate of completion.

What certification courses are available for me to upgrade myself if I have completed all the three modules of the programme?

Upon obtaining the executive certificate, you will then be eligible to apply for the diploma modules. Upon completion of all three diploma modules, you will be awarded “Executive Diploma in Directorship”.

We do not provide one-to-one coaching, however you may certainly approach the course facilitators, who will be happy to assist you.

Are the sessions of the programme interactive?

All modules are designed to be interactive, fun, practical and enjoyable. The programme is designed as an interactive experience with exclusive insights, exciting debates and ‘live’ case studies to leverage on the experience and knowledge of the course facilitators and fellow participants. There will be ample opportunities for networking.

Do I become a SID member once I apply for the membership of the Singapore Institute of Directors?

The Institute will take a few weeks to process your membership, including approval of your application by its Governing Council, and you will only be recognised as a SID member upon notification of approval.

Can I apply for 3-year membership of the Singapore Institute of Directors?

Yes, you can apply for 3-year membership once you are due for renewal. New members are not eligible for 3-year membership.

What is the Membership Admission Criteria for the Singapore Institute of Directors?

The Institute has 4 categories of membership. Individuals may apply to join as either Full Member or Affiliate Member. From time to time, the Governing Council may invite individuals who have met the prescribed criteria to be a Fellow or an Honorary Fellow.
